چکیده

T H E present investigation was undertaken by the senior author in the first place to shed further light on two questions which emerged in the course of investigations on the role of the pituitary in the regulation of colour response (Hogben and Winton, 1922-23, Hogben, 1923-24). These were: (a) how far the action of pituitary extract is a specific one for the uterus or extends to contractile tissues generally; (6) with what justification the action of adrenaline on an effector organ may, in the absence of direct evidence, be regarded as indicative of sympathetic innervation. Study of the action of vertebrate autocoids on the contractile tissues of Invertebrata was therefore undertaken ; and after preliminary experiments directed to select suitable materials it was decided to confine attention to the isolated heart of the crab (Maia squinado), the perfused heart of the scallop (Pecten maximus), the isolated crop of the sea-slug (Aplysia), and the isolated pharynx of the sea-mouse {Aphrodite). The first was suggested by Carlson's work (1905) on Limulus, the only arthropod in which an isolated heart

Relaxant effect of Humulus lupulus extracts on isotonic rat's ileum contractions

O Objective: Many biological studies have been done to determine the activity of medicinal plants on gastrointestinal function. Since acetylcholine is the major transmitter involved in the gastrointestinal motility and there are some evidences regarding the cholinergic modulatory effect of hops extract, in the present study spasmolytic and antispasmodic action of hops(Humulus lupulus) on acetyl...

Protective Role of Leptadenia Hastata on the Haematological and Biochemical Alterations in Adrenaline-Induced Hypertensive Rats

Background: Leptadenia hastata (L. Hastata) is a plant used for various diseases in Nigeria. This study evaluated the protective effects of L. hastate on the haematological and biochemical alterations in adrenaline-induced hypertensive rats. Methods: Twenty-five rats were divided equally into five groups (A-E). Groups A-D were given 0.5 mg/kg adrenaline, groups A and B were treated with 100 an...

Introduction & Objective: Vascular complications represent the main cause of mortality in diabetic patients. Considering the role of plants containing flavonoids in elimination of diabetic vascular disorders and the protective effect of the aqueous extract of Artemisia annua on aortic contractile response in diabetic rats, we evaluated the mechanism of vasodilating action of Artemisia annua ext...

Pectic Acid Effects on Prolactin Secretion in GH3/B6 Rat Pituitary Cell Line

Background: Pectic acid extracted from plants increases the secretion of prolactin (PRL) when injected intravenously into ewes or fed to rats. Fragments of ewe hypophysis and lactating rabbit mammary gland incubated in vitro in the presence of pectic acid secreted more PRL and caseins compared to the controls. However, it is not known whether pectic acid directly stimulates PRL secretion in pi...

Background In the present study the effects of a hydro-alcoholic saffron (Crocus sativus) extract on pituitary-ovary axis and folliculogenesis were investigated. The aim was to study the possible role of saffron in female fertility and thereby show its usefulness in treating infertility and reproductive disorders in females. MaterialsAndMethods The study consisted of 50 adult female Sprague daw...
